Woman side sleeping with makeup on

Too much sun, using tobacco, not enough sleep. Most of us know the big offenders when it comes to premature aging. But some of the habits doing the most damage are so small and routine that you probably don’t think twice about them, and over months and years, they add up.

Here’s a look at a few surprisingly common habits that could be quietly aging your skin, along with what can help reverse some of that damage.

Everyday Habits That Add Up Over Time

None of these habits are dramatic on their own. That’s exactly why they’re so easy to overlook. But repeated day after day, they create the kind of fine lines, sagging, and discoloration that people often blame entirely on age or genetics.

Sleeping on Your Side

If you consistently sleep on the same side, you may be pressing your face into the pillow the same way, night after night. Over time, that repeated pressure and friction can contribute to lines that settle into the skin on your cheeks, chin, outer eyes, and forehead.

Unlike expression lines, sleep lines don’t relax when your face is at rest, since they form from mechanical folding rather than muscle movement. This means Botox won’t help. What’s worse? Side sleeping can also have a similar effect below the neck, contributing to creping on the upper chest.

Drinking Through a Straw

Sipping through a straw seems harmless, but it relies on the same repetitive pursing motion as smoking and vaping. Do it enough times a day, every day, for years, and it can encourage the formation of fine vertical lines around the mouth.

Squinting at Screens

Between phones, laptops, and monitors, many of us spend hours a day squinting at bright or poorly lit screens. That repeated muscle contraction around the eyes contributes to crow’s feet over time, the same way years of squinting in the sun would.

Skipping SPF on Your Neck and Hands

You might be diligent about applying sunscreen to your face, but the neck, chest, and hands are often an afterthought, if they’re covered at all. Both areas get plenty of sun exposure and have thinner skin than the face, which means sun damage tends to show up there as sagging, crepiness, and dark spots, often before it’s noticeable anywhere else.

Sleeping With Your Makeup On

Even a few hours of unremoved makeup overnight can trap oil, debris, and product against the skin, clogging pores and interfering with the skin’s natural overnight repair process. Do this consistently, and it can contribute to dullness, breakouts, and a rougher texture over time.

Taking Long, Hot Showers

A hot shower feels great, but water that’s too hot strips away the skin’s natural oils and can weaken its protective barrier. Over time, this can leave skin drier, more sensitive, and less able to hold onto the hydration it needs to look plump and smooth.

Treatments That Can Help Undo the Damage

The good news is that none of these habits cause permanent damage on their own, and several of our treatments are designed to address the fine lines, sagging, and discoloration they can leave behind.

Morpheus8: Combines microneedling with radiofrequency to rebuild collagen and firm skin from within.

Dysport/Botox: Relaxes the muscles to minimize the repetitive movement behind crow’s feet and lines around the mouth.

CryoCorrect: Freezes away sun spots and dark spots anywhere on the body, including the neck and hands.

HydraFacial: Deeply hydrates skin that’s lost moisture, plus exfoliates to remove product buildup.

ZO Skin Health: Physician-grade products with retinol, antioxidants, and SPF to help prevent further damage.

Small Changes, Bigger Results

You don’t need to overhaul your routine overnight. Being a little more mindful of these everyday habits goes a long way over time.

And for damage that’s already done, we’re happy to talk through which treatments make sense for your skin! Schedule a consultation, and we’ll help you build a plan that fits your goals.
